Q. Can you share your experiences in working with sociopaths or individuals with disordered personalities, both personally and professionally?

A. I am honored to be associated with this platform! Over my two decades in private practice, I have predominantly worked with victims of sociopathic behaviors, while also having experience with perpetrators. My background includes extensive treatment of dissociative disorders, PTSD, complex PTSD, and related mood disorders. My training in contemporary psychoanalytic and psychodynamic therapy allows me to assist individuals in healing and rebuilding their sense of self following traumatic encounters with Narcissists, Sociopaths, or Psychopaths. I have supported numerous survivors of childhood abuse and specialize in treating dissociative disorders. I’ve witnessed remarkable transformations in my clients as they navigate their healing journeys. I am both knowledgeable and empathetic, helping clients address betrayals of trust that occur in both childhood and adulthood. I also work with those experiencing vicarious trauma.

Q. How do you approach helping clients who have experienced interactions with a sociopath?

A. Initially, I validate their emotional experiences, then we focus on establishing effective boundaries against the individual or group involved. The immediate need for safety and security is paramount. I strive to strengthen the individual before delving into the traumatic details to avoid further destabilization. My aim is to enhance overall functioning, using trauma-informed techniques tailored to each client’s unique circumstances.

Q. What do you believe is the most significant challenge for those who have been betrayed by a sociopath?

A. From my perspective, individuals must confront feelings of helplessness and powerlessness that arise when dealing with a pathological person. This acceptance leads to the realization that one may never find an answer to the question, “Why me?” True healing begins when one can derive meaning from their experiences and integrate them so that these events no longer dictate their lives.

Q. What is one key piece of advice you would offer to readers recovering from a sociopath’s betrayal?

A. It’s crucial to learn to recognize the warning signs of sociopathic behavior. Trust your instincts; scientific evidence suggests that our bodies have built-in alarms for danger. If you feel that your intuitive sense has been compromised due to past trauma, I can help you rebuild that trust in yourself.
