In memory of her tragically slain cousin, Dr. Amber Ault is offering a special promotion on her book, “The Five Step Exit.” This heartfelt initiative serves as both a tribute to her cousin, Linnea Satterfield, and a means to support others seeking to escape toxic relationships.
Dear Readers,
This month marks a year since the horrific murder of my second cousin, Linnea Satterfield, at the hands of her ex-partner. While I won’t delve into the graphic details, the situation is all too common. Linnea’s ex had a documented history of violence against women, and their tumultuous relationship had ended recently. Tragically, she was killed shortly after moving into her new home, signaling her intent to move on. It’s a sobering reminder that individuals leaving toxic relationships often face the greatest dangers during this transition. Despite her efforts to stay vigilant—such as installing security cameras and having friends check on her—she ultimately misjudged the risks of remaining in her ex’s vicinity. This underestimation of his dangerous tendencies led to her untimely death.
The crucial takeaway isn’t that one should avoid leaving abusive partners; rather, it’s essential to recognize that exiting relationships with antisocial, narcissistic, or borderline individuals requires a different approach than leaving a healthy partnership. It demands mindful preparation to mitigate potential risks—be they emotional, physical, or even fatal.
In 2015, I wrote “The Five Step Exit: Skills You Need to Leave a Psychopath, Narcissist, or Other Toxic Partner and Recover Your Happiness Now,” unaware of Linnea’s plight. My aim was to equip individuals facing various toxic relationship dynamics—whether violent or not—with practical tools for leaving and healing. Many readers have shared that the book has empowered them or their loved ones to break free from harmful relationships, thus reclaiming the happiness that Linnea had lost.
Following her murder, I felt compelled to do more and invited you, my readers, to donate copies of my book to places where they could make a significant impact. The response was overwhelming. Many generously provided copies to local libraries and therapists, or left them in community spaces, prompting reports like, “I placed a copy in the Free Little Library, and it was gone the next day.” This kindness has restored my hope that we can help prevent further tragedies like Linnea’s.
This July, I’m asking for your support once again. I’ve reduced the price of “The Five Step Exit” on Amazon to cover only the cost of printing and shipping. By purchasing even just one or five copies to share, you can contribute to a living memorial for Linnea and others who have suffered from toxic relationships. Together, we can help create a safer and happier world.
You can find the book here: The Five Step Exit.
Thank you for your continued support and for spreading the word about this initiative. Together, we can make a difference.
Warm regards,
Amber Ault, Ph.D., MSW
