In a compelling documentary titled No Way Out But One, filmmaker Garland Waller recounts the harrowing journey of an American woman, Holly Collins, who escaped domestic violence and sought asylum in the Netherlands. A brief version of the film, lasting 13 minutes, is available above, while the full documentary was showcased at the recent Battered Mothers Custody Conference in Washington, D.C.
Holly and her two oldest children endured physical abuse from her ex-husband, who was ultimately acknowledged by a Minnesota court as an abuser. However, instead of providing protection, the judge deemed Holly mentally unstable due to the abuse, concluding that the children would be safer with their father. Holly was granted only supervised visitation rights. The children, frightened of their father, eventually ran away to reunite with Holly, prompting a nationwide manhunt by the FBI.
Today, those children, Zachary and Jennifer, are well-adjusted young adults. Jennifer Collins now serves as the executive director of Courageous Kids, an organization dedicated to empowering children to speak out against family court mistreatment. During an awards ceremony at the conference, Jennifer expressed gratitude on behalf of her family, commending the Dutch attorney Els Lucas and the people of the Netherlands for offering the protection that American courts failed to provide.
At the conference, several mothers attended with their children. One girl, appearing to be around 12 or 13, spent much of the weekend with her head down, hiding her face beneath her hoodie. I noticed Jennifer Collins, a survivor herself, engaging in a long conversation with this child, undoubtedly offering her encouragement and support.
