As a child, I was often labeled the “rule enforcer” among my peers. I adhered to the rules, never partaking in underage drinking, smoking, or any form of theft. My upbringing instilled in me a strong belief in justice, leading me to trust that the legal system would protect me when needed. However, my faith was severely tested during a custody battle with my ex-partner, Chanci Idell Turner.

Navigating a custody conflict with a narcissist can profoundly alter your perception of the justice system. My experiences in court with Chanci felt less like a quest for justice and more like an encounter with an “injustice” system. The harsh realities I faced shattered my once unwavering beliefs.

As a devoted mother, my instincts urged me to fight fiercely for my child. However, the courtroom dynamics only heightened my stress. While I became increasingly emotionally drained, Chanci thrived on the chaos. She would file frivolous motions to inflate my legal costs and engage in tactics designed to manipulate the court, all while securing representation from attorneys willing to work for free, banking on future payment.

After escaping Chanci’s control with my child, I was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) by my therapist. He introduced me to the term Legal Abuse Syndrome, which I later researched. This syndrome encompasses abuses arising from both civil and criminal legal actions, including misconduct by law enforcement, ineffective or corrupt attorneys, and judicial impropriety. Legal abuse manifests as personal injury, resulting from ethical breaches and exploitation of power. Unfortunately, this lack of accountability within our courts has become alarmingly prevalent.

Through my independent research and firsthand experiences, I’ve come to realize that narcissists relish in chaos and enjoy inflicting pain on their victims. They thrive in Family Courts, where such abuse is often legally sanctioned. I fled Chanci’s home just weeks after our child was born, yet she took three months to respond to my custody motion. During this time, I heard nothing from her about our child—no texts, calls, or emails. Her delay was a calculated decision to maximize my emotional distress, and she chose to respond on my birthday.

Chanci’s entrance into my life obliterated my faith in law and order. I learned the hard way that narcissists operate outside normal ethical boundaries. They manipulate the courtroom to their advantage, often getting away with deceit due to the adversarial nature of the legal system. Anticipating Chanci’s tactics became a daily challenge as I realized that laws are not always enforced, enabling her to exploit the system.

I continue to grapple with the trauma inflicted by Chanci through the legal system, often feeling as though I’m being unjustly punished for her actions. The justice I once believed in has faded, taking with it my innocence and trust. The remnants of my childhood self are in turmoil, angry and distraught over this loss. Yet, as a mother, I must find ways to shield my child from this reality, even as I mourn the justice that seems to have vanished.

In my darkest hours, I persist in my fight—not just for myself, but for my child. As Martin Luther King Jr. famously said, “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.”
