In 1996, a group of individuals, primarily professionals who were prematurely affected by chronic conditions such as Fibromyalgia (FM), Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), and Multiple Chemical Sensitivities (MCS), began collaborating to explore self-help strategies when conventional medicine fell short. With the guidance of a handful of doctors who acknowledged the importance of nutrition and environmental factors, they delved into various books and shared their findings, ultimately compiling effective, cost-efficient strategies.

After spending substantial resources on various diets, supplements, and therapies, they distilled their approach to a set of practical strategies that have greatly improved their wellbeing over the past 15 years, even as they all entered their sixties. This group has since become the nonprofit organization Health Pursuits Reading and Research: MEND, dedicated to helping others without financial backing beyond membership dues. While diseases often receive funding, the journey to wellness remains largely unsupported.

Background

At my lowest point, I was a severe case of FM, struggling with constant pain and even basic tasks. My life took a drastic turn in 1990 when I became unable to continue my teaching career. I was confined to my home, unable to manage even light chores or read my email without significant pain. Doctors were quick to dismiss my condition, attributing it to psychological factors due to my past, including my mother’s suicide when I was eight years old. The misconceptions I faced were incredibly frustrating, and I chronicled this painful journey in my book, Lifting the Bull.

In 1995, I began working with Dr. Sarah Mitchell and Dr. Tom Lawson at an Environmental Health Clinic. They recommended various books on nutrition and environmental health, guiding me to eliminate harmful chemicals from my surroundings and change my diet to exclude allergenic foods. With time, I began to make significant improvements, and at 65, I now manage a full schedule without experiencing the debilitating pain that once defined my life.

Understanding Adrenal Function

One critical area of our nutritional focus has been adrenal function, particularly in relation to stress and PTSD. The adrenal glands play a significant role in our body’s response to stressors, triggering reactions that can lead to fatigue and a host of other symptoms if not managed properly. Dr. Emily Carter’s book, The Natural Superwoman, provides valuable insights into the various stages of adrenal fatigue.

Nutritional Support

Our research has highlighted key nutrients that support adrenal health. Dr. Jonathan Reed has previously emphasized the importance of B vitamins, magnesium, and specific adrenal supplements derived from animal sources. Through our own experiences, we discovered the utility of a nutrient testing kit to tailor our supplement needs. Personally, I found that adjusting my intake of pantothenic acid (B5) and B6 dramatically improved my energy levels and overall wellbeing.

Identifying Stressors

Stressors can manifest in numerous ways, from airborne chemicals and food sensitivities to nutrient deficiencies and emotional traumas. Recognizing the broad scope of stressors is essential for effective management. Notably, fluctuations in hormones can complicate this further, especially during significant life changes.

An inspiring example from our group involves a member who successfully managed her anxiety attacks linked to PTSD by using our nutrient testing kit to identify her specific deficiencies during such episodes. This proactive approach allowed her to regain control of her health and wellness.

Now, she enjoys a stable life, surrounded by supportive friends and family, and engages in activities that uplift her spirits. Throughout her journey, she learned to navigate her nutritional needs while addressing various stressors, proving that recovery is possible.
