However, what truly shocked me was the commentary from one of CNN’s so-called experts, Dr. Frank Farley. He dismissed the prosecution’s theory regarding Casey Anthony’s motive for murder as absurd. He argued that no mother, in his view, would kill her child merely to have more freedom to socialize.
Dr. Farley expressed his thoughts in a blog on CNN titled Infanticide to Party: A Nonsensical Motive. He stated: “There is no credible motivational psychology I am aware of that would support the idea that a single mother who appeared to care for her child would meticulously plot and execute her child’s murder just to enjoy some leisure time.”
He continued, suggesting that such a drastic action would require a compelling incentive, and simply wanting to party does not suffice. He questioned how any rational person could contemplate such a heinous act. Farley also noted the absence of evidence showing that Caylee was a challenging child whose behavior could provoke a violent response. His arguments seemed to ignore the complexities of human behavior and the existence of individuals who lack a moral compass.
It is clear that Dr. Farley lacks a fundamental understanding of sociopathy. Individuals with such disorders often commit horrific acts for the most trivial reasons. For instance, Diane Downs, who infamously shot her children in 1983 to pursue a romantic relationship, serves as a stark example of this.
What is even more concerning is that Frank Farley, Ph.D., is a psychologist and professor at Temple University, as well as a former president of the American Psychological Association. He teaches graduate courses in educational psychology, perpetuating his flawed theories. Farley has even proposed a concept he calls Type T Personalities, which he claims are thrill-seekers driven by a need for constant stimulation. He recently wrote an op-ed in the Los Angeles Times arguing that this explains why politicians engage in infidelity. However, such behaviors are often better explained as manifestations of sociopathic traits—like grandiosity and a sense of entitlement.
It is alarming that he seems unaware that a mother could potentially kill her child with very little motivation. This ignorance is alarming, especially considering the potential impact on his students.
