The Bluebird of Joy

In a moment of self-reflection, I realized something profound: I am truly happy. Today feels different from previous days, and I can’t help but wonder why. Just a couple of months ago, I was struggling. Yet, little has changed in my circumstances.

I might have shed a few pounds, but that’s not the source of my joy. My finances are tighter now than they were then, and the challenging individuals in my life still show no sign of improvement. I haven’t discovered a soulmate arriving on a white horse—nor even a donkey.

Finding Joy in Nature

So what’s bringing me joy today? I was fortunate enough to witness the “Bluebird of Happiness.” Yes, the actual vibrant bluebird that symbolizes joy. I encountered two Eastern Bluebirds today, bright males whose colors were so striking that I had to consult my bird guide to confirm my sighting. They weren’t the typical dull bluebirds we often see nesting in fence posts; these were the magnificent Eastern Bluebirds.

Why did seeing these birds elate me? Today, I consciously chose to focus on one uplifting thing rather than wallowing in the aspects of life I wish to change but cannot. I decided to embrace the sight of those two male Eastern Bluebirds perched atop a piece of farm equipment, then fluttering to my studio window, pecking at their reflections—a metaphor for claiming their territory and happiness.

A Season of Renewal

The sun is shining, the air is refreshing with a hint of spring, and these birds herald the arrival of the season. After enduring a dreary, cold winter, I can feel renewal in my spirit. It reminds me of a beloved book, Come Spring, which tells the story of a pioneer girl in colonial New York, who faced harsh winters with the unwavering hope that everything would improve “Come Spring.”

Today, with the birth of a new calf and the sighting of those two Eastern Bluebirds, I can declare that my spring has arrived. I will embrace this newfound happiness. The winter has passed, and today is a day of joy.
