In light of our recent announcement regarding expanded Reserved Instance Options for Amazon EC2, I’m excited to share similar enhancements for the Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS).
We are introducing Light and Heavy Utilization Reserved Instances specifically for the MySQL and Oracle database engines. Depending on your usage patterns, you can achieve savings of 30% to 55% on your On-Demand DB Instance costs.
Light Utilization Reserved Instances
Light Utilization Reserved Instances come with the lowest upfront payment and are perfect for DB instances that are used intermittently for development, testing, or short-term projects. With this option, you can save up to 30% on a 1-year term and 35% on a 3-year term compared to On-Demand pricing.
Medium Utilization Reserved Instances
Medium Utilization Reserved Instances require a higher initial payment than Light Utilization but offer a significantly reduced hourly rate. These are suitable for workloads that are operational most of the time, albeit with some fluctuations in usage. You can save up to 35% for a 1-year term and 48% for a 3-year term compared to On-Demand pricing. This option has been available since August 2010.
Heavy Utilization Reserved Instances
Heavy Utilization Reserved Instances provide the best value for production database instances that are expected to run continuously, 24/7. This type requires an upfront fee along with a low hourly rate throughout the one or three-year term. You can save 41% for a 1-year term and 55% for a 3-year term when compared to On-Demand rates.
These Reserved Instance options empower you to optimize your spending based on your specific workload requirements. The table below outlines the various Amazon RDS offerings to help reduce your costs effectively. For instance, if you need a DB instance for approximately 5 months, a Light Utilization Reserved Instance would yield the most cost-effective solution.
