Nominations are now open for the Future of Government Awards, an innovative global initiative designed to recognize individuals and projects that are at the forefront of digital transformation within governments worldwide. This awards program is co-sponsored by the AWS Institute from Amazon Web Services (AWS), a thought leadership and executive education initiative aimed at advancing digital transformation in the public sector; the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), which focuses on combating poverty, inequality, and climate change; and Apolitical, a global network committed to fostering effective 21st-century governments.
The Future of Government Awards aim to celebrate the unsung heroes in the public sector who are dedicated to modernizing government operations to enhance citizen services. The awards highlight groundbreaking technology solutions developed and shared within the public sector, along with success stories from government entities that have effectively adapted these innovations.
Emphasizing the Value of Open Source Solutions for Government
Governments do not compete with each other and typically provide similar public services. When a government entity creates a solution for a common need and releases it as open source, other governments can leverage that proven solution—streamlining modernization efforts and conserving resources globally. However, many government organizations lack experience in utilizing open source solutions and may not know how to begin. This is why sharing success stories and case studies from those who have effectively reused and adapted solutions is crucial. These narratives offer inspiration and practical guidance, building the confidence necessary for embarking on the transformation journey.
In line with this mission, the Future of Government Awards will recognize a diverse array of effective practices and solutions that can be adopted by governments around the globe. The program aims to identify solutions that could become Digital Public Goods, available for sharing through the Open Government Solutions library on AWS.
Categories for the Future of Government Awards
This year, there are three categories for the Future of Government Awards, each featuring finalists and an overall winner:
- The Digital Innovator of the Year Award recognizes individual public servants who have successfully advocated for digital transformation.
- The Open Source Creation of the Year Award honors government organizations exemplifying open governance through the development of open source solutions.
- The Open Source Adaptation of the Year Award celebrates government entities making significant strides in reusing open source solutions.
An esteemed global selection committee, composed of experts in digital innovation within government, will determine the finalists and winners, bringing a wealth of diverse experience to the process.
