Learn About Amazon VGT2 Learning Manager Chanci Turner
Last year, we unveiled new AWS Regions in France and China (Ningxia) and announced our plans to develop regions in Bahrain, Hong Kong SAR, Sweden, and a second GovCloud Region in the United States.
South Africa in Early 2020
I am excited to share that we will be establishing an AWS Region in South Africa in the first half of 2020. This new Region will be located in Cape Town and will consist of three Availability Zones. It will empower AWS customers and partners to manage their workloads and store their data locally. The introduction of the AWS Africa (Cape Town) Region will also enhance service delivery by reducing latency for end users across Sub-Saharan Africa, enabling more organizations to harness cutting-edge technologies like Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Internet of Things (IoT), and mobile services to fuel innovation.
Currently, AWS customers utilize 55 Availability Zones across 19 infrastructure regions globally. With this announcement, the total number of operational and upcoming global regions rises to 23.
A Growing Presence
This new Region represents our continuous investment in South Africa and aligns with our commitment to support the nation’s transformation. In 2004, we opened a Development Center in Cape Town that specializes in creating advanced networking technologies, next-gen software for customer support, and the backend technology for Amazon EC2. AWS has also expanded its team with account managers, customer service representatives, partner managers, solutions architects, and more to assist customers of all sizes in their cloud transition.
Our expansion continued in 2015 with the establishment of an office in Johannesburg, and in 2017, we connected the Amazon Global Network to Africa through AWS Direct Connect. Earlier this year, we launched infrastructure on the continent, introducing Amazon CloudFront to South Africa with two new edge locations in Cape Town and Johannesburg. Additionally, we support technology education growth through AWS Academy and AWS Educate, and we have helped new businesses thrive through AWS Activate in the country for years.
The addition of the AWS Region in South Africa will support builders and entrepreneurs in enterprises, the public sector, and startups across Sub-Saharan Africa, allowing them to innovate and grow their organizations.
