Connecting to Amazon EC2 Instances is a seamless experience with the AWS Toolkit for Visual Studio. One of the features I find most useful is the ability to quickly access my EC2 instances via Remote Desktop. The toolkit conveniently allows me to store my private keys in an encrypted format. This means that when I want to start a Remote Desktop session, all I need to do is confirm the key pair and hit OK.

For instance, if I want to connect to my instance, I would go to the EC2 Instances view, right-click on the instance, and select Open Remote Desktop.

Since I haven’t used the private key with the toolkit yet, it prompts me to enter it. I’ll keep the Save Private Key option checked for future convenience, and then click OK.

At this point, the toolkit initiates the Remote Desktop session, and within moments, I’m logged into my Windows instance, ready to work. The next time I connect to this instance or any instance using the same key pair, the process becomes even smoother. The toolkit remembers my private key, so I simply confirm that I want to use this specific key pair, and it handles the rest.

Not only is it possible to initiate a Remote Desktop session from the EC2 Instances view, but I can also connect directly from the AWS Elastic Beanstalk Environment view and the AWS CloudFormation Stack view. By clicking the Connect to Instance button in the toolbar, I am prompted to select the specific EC2 instance if multiple instances are associated with the environment or stack.

Connecting to my Linux instances is just as straightforward. The toolkit utilizes the Windows SSH client, Putty, which I had to install beforehand. It also simplifies the process of storing my private key and automatically converts it from its native PEM format to Putty’s PPK format.
