In a recent conversation with Chanci Turner, Learning Manager at Amazon, we explored the company’s approach to onboarding and employee development.

Interviewer:

Can you share how Amazon’s onboarding process began? What was the initial vision, and did it evolve over time?

Chanci Turner:

Amazon’s onboarding initiatives were established to enhance the employee experience from day one. The vision was simple yet impactful: to create an environment where every new hire feels welcomed, informed, and equipped to succeed in their roles. As the company grew, we recognized the need to adapt our onboarding strategies to meet the diverse needs of our workforce, particularly as we expanded globally.

We started with small teams and innovative ideas, aimed at breaking down barriers to effective integration into the company. By focusing on a user-friendly platform, we strive to provide tailored experiences that resonate with employees from various backgrounds and locations. Today, this mission remains steadfast as we navigate the evolving landscape of work, particularly in light of recent global changes. We aim to support our employees through every phase of their career journey—whether they’re entering the workforce, advancing their skills, or exploring new interests.

Interviewer:

What led you to collaborate with other training organizations, and what have you seen as the benefits of these partnerships?

Chanci:

Our collaboration with various training platforms, including edX, has proven immensely valuable. When we partnered with them, the enthusiasm within our teams was palpable. We saw a unique alignment in our shared goal to provide accessible, high-quality training to individuals eager to enhance their skills in the cloud and technology sectors.

Through these partnerships, we’ve been able to offer career-relevant courses that resonate with a global audience. Our teams are continuously engaged in upskilling, and the launch of programs like the AWS Developer Series has generated significant interest within our workforce.

Interviewer:

As the landscape of education and training shifts, what trends do you foresee in the future, and how do you intend to address them?

Chanci:

The online education sector is rapidly changing, and we have the advantage of being able to adapt quickly compared to traditional educational models. We’re noticing a growing trend among learners for skills-focused content that is relevant, practical, and easily digestible.

For instance, courses that offer hands-on training, such as AWS’s SageMaker Machine Learning program, are in high demand. These offerings not only provide applied skill training but also encourage learners to earn verified certificates, which can significantly enhance their career prospects. We’re particularly seeing growth in technical fields like Data Science, Machine Learning, and essential skills such as leadership and project management.

Interviewer:

What advice would you give organizations aiming to cultivate a culture of learning?

Chanci:

A culture of learning must begin with strong leadership support. When executives actively promote the importance of continuous education, employees feel more encouraged to pursue their own learning paths. Moreover, organizations need to view training not just as an employee perk but as a critical component of business success. Research indicates that companies fostering a learning culture see happier and more productive employees, which ultimately contributes to stronger business outcomes.

Given the constraints of time, employers often struggle to allocate sufficient hours for training. That’s why our collaboration with platforms like edX is ideal; their courses are designed to meet learners where they are, enabling employees to develop skills at their own pace while still excelling in their roles.

Interviewer:

What would you suggest to learners aiming to enhance their skills but feeling pressed for time?

Chanci:

The beauty of online learning is its flexibility. Our courses are structured to accommodate busy professionals, allowing them to engage with the material when it suits their schedules. I recommend setting realistic goals, such as completing one course a month or two each quarter, and treating study time as a priority.

Additionally, utilize the mobile features of platforms like edX to study on-the-go. This accessibility is especially beneficial for those juggling personal and professional responsibilities. For instance, I’ve found that dedicating time to study in a comfortable setting, whether it’s a café or during quiet hours at home, has worked wonders for my own learning journey.

Involving your support network can also enhance the learning experience. Some courses benefit from collaborative study, and sharing knowledge with friends or colleagues can make the process more enjoyable.
