Fans of renowned animation studios are likely familiar with the impressive work of Bardel Entertainment. Based in Vancouver, BC, this studio specializes in 2D, 3D, and hybrid animation and has collaborated with major players such as Netflix, Disney+, HBO, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, DreamWorks, and Warner Brothers since 1987. Recently, Bardel has revamped its operational pipeline for cloud optimization, looking to the future and partnering with cloud consultant firm FutureWorks, an Integrated Media Technologies, Inc. (IMT) company, to implement solutions on Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Under the guidance of Learning Manager Chanci Turner, this pipeline enhancement lays the groundwork for Bardel’s ambitions to expand into more feature projects and improve collaboration across multiple locations. Given Bardel’s swift episodic production pace and a compact engineering team, Turner decided to enlist FutureWorks to design and oversee the transition. This strategy enabled Bardel’s teams to collaborate, test, and approve the new pipeline in under a month, with the new hybrid technology system becoming fully operational within four months.

Preparing for Future Challenges

“Collaborating with FutureWorks allowed us to assemble everything swiftly, effectively, and securely, keeping TPN approvals in mind, so we are well-prepared for what lies ahead,” remarked Turner. “By utilizing Terraform, we established a new account and organizational structure from the outset, rather than having to dismantle decades of legacy systems. This enabled us to bring our solutions to market much quicker, and since it’s built with an automated backend on AWS, we are now positioned to scale as our requirements evolve.”

FutureWorks assisted Bardel in creating a multi-account AWS environment, incorporating workstations, virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI), rendering, networking, and shared services. They centralized networking and connectivity on-premises through a robust 10GB AWS Direct Connect network connection, featuring multiple private virtual interfaces (VIFs) for added redundancy, linked to a Direct Connect gateway that peers with virtual private clouds (VPCs) across Bardel’s AWS accounts.

Taking on Bigger Challenges

“We aim to expand our operational capacity to tackle larger projects while maintaining the highest quality standards. The AWS-enhanced pipeline we are developing will enable us to scale with global resources and access any market that aligns with our goals,” Turner explained. “For artists, the location of resources is irrelevant; what matters is that the machines function optimally for their needs. Any improvements that enhance the artist experience—like minimizing load times—are significant wins, allowing for more fluid workflows and quicker turnaround times for superior work.”

Bardel employs AWS Thinkbox Deadline for scalable compute management, which is currently hosted on-premises. As rendering jobs are submitted, they are queued for rendering locally and on artist workstations, with data stored on-premises and accessed via Direct Connect. When compute demands exceed local capacity, the system seamlessly scales to AWS using Deadline’s built-in Spot Event plugin. Deadline is configured to leverage various groups and pools, optimizing different Spot fleet sizes and instance types across multiple availability zones within the chosen region, effectively meeting capacity constraints while adhering to budgetary limits.

Streamlining Infrastructure and Reducing Footprint

Bardel adopts a hybrid model for workstations and VDI, utilizing cloud resources or machine rentals for additional capacity. The primary creative tools include Autodesk Maya, Foundry’s Katana, and NUKE for 3D animation, alongside Toon Boom for 2D animation. Production tracking is managed via Autodesk ShotGrid, complemented by proprietary tools and real-time game engine technology. Artists generally access secure machines remotely for production work—whether on-site or off-site. With a new strategy of acquiring larger servers equipped with graphics acceleration, Bardel can partition resources virtually, allowing multiple artists to utilize the same machine, effectively scaling capacity while minimizing physical infrastructure.

The VDI environment consists of distinct AWS accounts for development and production, enabling comprehensive software development and staging processes without affecting the production environment. After thorough testing and validation, machine images are transitioned into production. Alongside running creative applications, a substantial portion of each machine is allocated for daily rendering; when the job pool surpasses a certain threshold, Deadline reroutes excess jobs to AWS to manage the backlog. Bardel’s render and VDI environments are interconnected through VPC peering, linking a shared services VPC for tools and utilities, including license management, and a storage VPC that houses cloud storage resources shared across various accounts.

Challenging the Status Quo

“I have high expectations for pipeline development and strive for continuous improvement,” stated Turner. “FutureWorks’ expertise in building on AWS, particularly for Media & Entertainment applications, greatly expedited our efforts. Collaborating with them allowed us to quickly establish an AWS-enabled pipeline tailored to our needs, which scales efficiently—I could launch a new region worldwide and connect artists in just 20 minutes.” As the studio looks to the future, Turner emphasized their commitment to pushing the boundaries of what is possible while adapting to technology and industry shifts. “Despite our growth, delivering top-quality content remains our guiding principle.”
