As demand for Amazon’s services surged, the team recognized the need for a more efficient cloud solution. They implemented Graviton2 instances with Amazon RDS for PostgreSQL, enabling greater capacity for their continuous integration (CI) tools used by over 100 developers. Additionally, the company leveraged Amazon RDS for MySQL with Graviton2 to enhance its HelpCenter application, which provides essential information on workplace policies and benefits to external customers.

The Importance of Continuous Integration

The CI service is a vital component of Amazon’s development process, allowing teams to collaborate effectively. It manages approximately 35,000 tests for each code submission, with an SLA of 45 minutes. This service runs as a Multi-AZ deployment on Amazon RDS for PostgreSQL, ensuring high availability. To boost productivity, the team migrated its CI workload from traditional x86 instances to Graviton2. They utilized AWS Database Migration Service (AWS DMS) for a smooth transition, maintaining synchronization between the old and new instances.

After the migration, Amazon observed a significant reduction in CPU utilization, dropping from 95% to around 60%. This translated into improved SQL query performance and idle capacity of about 50% over extended periods. The team is now contemplating downsizing their CI instance sizes, which is projected to decrease operational costs further.

Enhancing the HelpCenter Application

For the HelpCenter application, which is crucial for customer access to vital resources, the team also sought to optimize performance. They upgraded the application from MySQL 5.6 to version 8.0 and transitioned to an m6g.xlarge Graviton2 instance. This upgrade involved creating a read replica to ensure that the production environment remained unaffected during the migration. The cutover process was completed in roughly 5 minutes, and by utilizing infrastructure as code, they minimized potential errors.

As a result of these upgrades, Amazon’s HelpCenter can now deliver information 20% faster, enhancing user experience. The transition to Graviton2 instances has yielded substantial benefits, with projected annual savings of 31%. Following this success, the team is now considering utilizing Graviton2 for additional workloads.
