You can now opt to receive notifications via the Amazon Simple Notification Service (SNS) for a broad range of events linked to your Relational Database Service (RDS) instances.

Why Notifications Matter

For database administrators (DBAs), these “push” notifications are essential for staying informed about critical issues such as low storage on your RDS DB Instances or the recovery from a failure. This feature is particularly valuable for applications or management tools interfacing with AWS APIs, as it allows for tracking the state of AWS objects without the need for constant polling (repeatedly calling the “Describe” functions). This can greatly reduce the number of API calls and streamline your application architecture.

How It Works

You can set up notifications for any of your RDS DB Instances by creating an Event Subscription. Notifications will be sent to your chosen Amazon SNS topic whenever specific events occur. There are over 40 types of notifications available, categorized as follows:

  • Availability – Database shutdown or restart.
  • Backup – Backup initiated or completed.
  • Configuration Change – Modifications to security groups, instance scaling events, password updates, and more.
  • Creation – Instances or snapshots created or deleted.
  • Failover – Failover (for Multi-AZ Instance) initiation or completion.
  • Low Storage – When allocated storage is depleted.
  • Maintenance – Going offline or coming back online for patch installation.
  • Recovery – Recovering a database instance.
  • Restoration – Restoring a database instance to a previous point in time or from a snapshot.

In conjunction with SNS, you can opt to receive notifications via email. These notifications can be managed through RDS APIs or the AWS Management Console. The console now includes a new section for DB Event Subscriptions, allowing you to easily begin creating a new subscription.
