In the past week, 21 notable announcements emerged from AWS, primarily focusing on regional expansions of existing services. This quieter week is about to shift gears as we prepare for more activity. This Wednesday, July 10, we’re excited to host our customers and partners at the AWS Summit in New York City. With numerous announcements lined up, anticipation is high for what’s to come.

As I prepare for my journey to the AWS Community Day in Douala, Cameroon, scheduled for next Saturday, I look forward to engaging with our customers, partners, students, and the entire AWS community.

Now, let’s dive into some of the key updates from last week.

Recent Launches: Key Features to Note

  1. Amazon S3 Access Grants Integration: The integration of Amazon S3 Access Grants with Amazon SageMaker and open-source Python frameworks is noteworthy. This feature enables the mapping of identities from directories like Active Directory or AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) principals to datasets in S3. By linking with Amazon SageMaker Studio, it facilitates the mapping of identities to machine learning datasets in S3. This integration simplifies data permission management, allowing the use of S3 Access Grants with popular open-source frameworks such as Django, TensorFlow, NumPy, and Pandas.
  2. Enhancements to AWS Lambda: AWS Lambda has introduced new features to streamline the management of function logs. Users can now capture Lambda logs in a JSON format without needing to implement their logging libraries. Additionally, it is now possible to set log levels (like ERROR, DEBUG, or INFO) without altering the code. Another improvement includes the ability to select the Amazon CloudWatch log group where Lambda sends logs.
  3. Fine-Grained Access Control in Amazon DataZone: Amazon DataZone has rolled out fine-grained access control, allowing data owners to manage access at both row and column levels. This enhancement enables organizations to catalog, discover, analyze, share, and govern data while maintaining strict governance and access controls. Data owners can now limit access to specific records rather than granting blanket access to entire datasets.
  4. AWS Direct Connect’s New 400 Gbps Connections: AWS Direct Connect is now offering native 400 Gbps dedicated connections at select locations. This service provides private, high-bandwidth connectivity between AWS and your data center, office, or colocation facility. The 400 Gbps connections are particularly advantageous for applications requiring the transfer of large datasets, such as machine learning and autonomous vehicle systems.
