Introducing the First Cloud Degree in the Middle East

The University of Bahrain (UOB) unveiled plans to launch a cloud computing degree program, the first of its kind in the Middle East. In collaboration with AWS Educate, UOB will offer a one-year cloud computing certificate starting in early 2020, initially available to students in engineering, ICT, and business fields, before expanding to all students in the fall. The four-year bachelor’s degree in cloud computing will also commence in the fall semester of 2020, equipping students with essential technical skills and hands-on experience for careers in cloud architecture, cybersecurity, software development, and DevOps.

AI Hackathon Promoting Social Good

AWS organized its inaugural artificial intelligence (AI) hackathon in Bahrain, culminating at the summit. This two-week event aimed to align with Bahrain’s national goal of enhancing digital skills among its citizens. Twenty-six students formed eight teams from UOB, engaging in innovation, training, and development. After 15 days of technical training and design thinking, each team tackled a distinct problem using AI tools on AWS. The winning team created a prototype for sign language assistance, utilizing AWS technologies such as AWS DeepLens and Amazon Polly, facilitating real-time voice-to-sign language translation and smart home control via sign language.
