In 2013, I first explored the advantages of GPU-powered computing with the introduction of the G2 instance type. Since then, AWS customers have leveraged G2 instances to provide enhanced graphics performance across a variety of devices, including mobile phones, televisions, and desktops.
Today, we are excited to unveil the next evolution: the G3 instance type. These instances, equipped with NVIDIA Tesla M60 GPUs, are available in three configurations (all VPC-only and EBS-only):

Each GPU can handle 8 GiB of memory and features 2048 parallel processing cores along with a hardware encoder that can support up to 10 H.265 (HEVC) 1080p30 streams and as many as 18 H.264 1080p30 streams. This makes G3 instances ideal for demanding tasks such as 3D rendering, virtual reality, video encoding, and graphics-intensive applications. The GPUs also support OpenGL 4.5, DirectX 12.0, CUDA 8.0, and OpenCL 1.2. When launching a G3 instance, users gain access to an NVIDIA GRID Virtual Workstation License, eliminating the need for separate license purchases.
These instances are powered by Intel Xeon E5-2686 v4 (Broadwell) processors clocked at 2.7 GHz. Enhanced Networking via the Elastic Network Adapter allows for up to 20 Gbps of total network bandwidth within a Placement Group, in addition to 14 Gbps of EBS bandwidth.

These instances are now available in the US East (Ohio), US East (N. Virginia), US West (Oregon), US West (N. California), AWS GovCloud (US), and Europe (Ireland) Regions. They can be launched as On-Demand, Reserved Instances, Spot Instances, or Dedicated Hosts. More regions are expected to be added soon.
