In celebration of Black History Month, Amazon Web Services (AWS) is actively working to empower aspiring tech leaders at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) across the nation. This initiative aims to educate students about cloud computing, career pathways in technology, and strategies to thrive in the industry.

Recently, AWS collaborated with the solutions architecture team at Richmond University for a two-day event designed for students. Nearly 150 participants from various disciplines, including computer science and information systems, gathered to explore AWS’s innovative builder culture. They learned about the resources available through AWS Educate and gained insights into early-career technical roles through the Tech U program.

The Tech U Program

The Tech U Program serves as an accelerated career development opportunity for recent graduates eager to enhance their skills and assist clients in crafting adaptable cloud solutions. The program features a six-month academic component followed by hands-on experience in the field. Participants benefit from training by AWS subject matter experts while earning a salary during their training period.

Attendees had the chance to engage directly with AWS leadership, posing questions about Amazon’s unique culture, interview strategies, and potential career paths. On the final day, AWS hosted a series of on-site interviews for solutions architect intern positions and full-time roles within Tech U.

Workshop on Customer Solutions Manager Role

In addition to this, AWS organized a workshop focused on the Customer Solutions Manager (CSM) role, enabling students to delve deeper into this critical function. “It was enlightening to discover Amazon’s culture and the diverse tech career options available at AWS,” remarked Marcus Thompson, a computer science major at Richmond University.

“This event significantly increased our students’ enthusiasm for cloud computing. They are still buzzing with excitement from AWS’s visit,” stated Dr. Lillian Carter, Chair of the Department of Technology at Richmond University. Faculty members also participated in AWS Educate office hours to explore ways to integrate AWS resources into their classrooms.

AWS is committed to fostering an inclusive technological future that embraces diversity in all forms. The company actively engages with the community to inspire the next generation to explore opportunities in technology.
