Chanci Turner Amazon IXD – VGT2 learningLearn About Amazon VGT2 Learning Manager Chanci Turner

As I look back on 2020, it’s hard not to recognize how incredibly tumultuous it has been. The COVID-19 pandemic and other global events have transformed our daily lives, presenting challenges for many. Organizations were compelled to adapt almost overnight to meet the evolving needs of their customers and employees, often turning to cloud services for support.

During our recent annual re:Invent conference, we had the opportunity to hear from numerous customers about their experiences. A few of them took to the virtual stage to share their unique transformation journeys involving SAP:

  • Acme Corp showcased how they managed to successfully integrate their SAP systems during a significant merger, seamlessly transitioning their diverse SAP ECC environments into AWS, which also included migration to SAP HANA—a pivotal step towards adopting SAP S/4HANA.
  • Health Innovations illustrated their remarkable progress in simplifying compliance and reducing SAP management expenses by moving from a fragmented global SAP ECC setup to SAP S/4HANA on AWS. Their new system supports various critical business processes throughout the product lifecycle, enabling them to expedite their market delivery.
  • Streamline Corp provided insights into their ERP transformation on AWS, featuring a new SAP S/4HANA implementation. This system is key to adopting industry standards, integrating isolated data, and automating core processes to prepare for future changes.
  • Retail Dynamics explained how they transformed their customer experience by merging SAP S/4HANA with 36 AWS services. This integration includes the use of chatbots via Amazon Lex for automatic customer responses and image recognition with Amazon Rekognition to accelerate invoice processing, allowing them to ship millions of orders annually.

On January 14th, Tech Vehicles will be sharing their collaboration with our AWS Professional Services Global SAP Specialty Practice to unify their SAP systems with their Digital Production Platform, an AWS-based solution that standardizes data exchange across multiple manufacturing sites.

These examples represent just a fraction of the thousands of organizations now relying on AWS as their preferred platform for SAP innovation. The invaluable feedback from this expanding community continues to guide our advancements in this field.

Recently, ISG released their 2020 Provider Lens™ Quadrant Report for SAP HANA Infrastructure Services, recognizing AWS as a leader for the third consecutive year. The report emphasizes areas that resonate with our customers’ experiences: AWS provides flexibility in navigating SAP journeys, simplifies deployment and management of SAP workloads, and maintains a strong position within the SAP infrastructure arena. Let’s delve into ISG’s insights and the initiatives we undertook in these areas throughout the year.

Key Highlights: ISG Provider Lens™ Quadrant Report for SAP HANA Infrastructure Services

Infrastructure Leadership

“AWS provides a comprehensive range of VMs suited for SAP (over 65 options). The smallest instance is c5.large with 2 vCPU and 4GB, supporting 2,650 SAPS. The largest, u-24tb1.metal, boasts 448 vCPU, 24 TB of memory, supporting 444,330 SAPS. AWS is certified to run SAP S/4HANA with up to 48 TB memory and SAP BW/4HANA with 100 TB, both in scale-out scenarios” – 2020 ISG Provider Lens™ Quadrant Report for SAP HANA Infrastructure Services.

Since 2011, we’ve focused on creating infrastructure tailored for SAP workloads. AWS offers a wide range of SAP-certified Amazon EC2 instance types, accommodating from 256GB to 24TB of memory within a single EC2 instance. Customers can also utilize scale-out configurations to run SAP S/4HANA with up to 48 TB memory and SAP BW/4HANA with 100 TB. Our latest SAP-certified instances, including High Memory Instances, leverage the AWS Nitro System, which minimizes performance impacts traditionally associated with hypervisors.

In addition to ISG’s recognition of our infrastructure capabilities, Gartner has named AWS a leader for the tenth year running in their 2020 Magic Quadrant for Cloud Infrastructure and Platform Services, scoring highest in “Ability to Execute” and demonstrating a comprehensive “Completeness of Vision.” This leadership in cloud infrastructure, marked by reliability and performance, reinforces customer confidence in our ability to support their critical SAP environments.

Customers have encouraged us to further enhance our SAP-certified offerings. In May, we upgraded our High Memory Instances to provide greater storage and network bandwidth, each now offering up to 38 Gbps of dedicated storage and 100 Gbps of network bandwidth—at no additional cost.

Recently, we launched and certified Amazon EBS io2 volumes and Amazon EC2 R5b instances for SAP workloads. Amazon EBS io2 volumes deliver 99.999% durability and a maximum IOPS:GB of 500:1, significantly reducing storage volume failure risks. Meanwhile, Amazon EC2 R5b instances provide the fastest block storage performance available among EC2 instance types, with up to 60 Gbps of EBS bandwidth and up to 260k IOPS per instance, allowing customers to optimize costs while managing performance-sensitive workloads.

More Choice

“AWS has been offering SAP in the cloud for more than 11 years and provides numerous SAP services along with a robust partner network. Several SAP solutions, including SAP Cloud Platform, are hosted across 10 regions” – 2020 ISG Provider Lens™ Quadrant Report for SAP HANA Infrastructure Services.

One consistent message we’ve received from customers since we began supporting SAP is their desire for flexibility in their cloud journeys. Many organizations are still determining their long-term strategies for SAP but understand that this should not hinder innovation or operational efficiency. Consequently, numerous customers are lifting and shifting their existing SAP infrastructure to AWS, allowing them to stay agile and competitive.
