in Europe, Launch, News

We have successfully launched AWS Regions in Sweden, Hong Kong, and Bahrain in less than a year, and are currently focused on establishing regions in Jakarta, Indonesia; Cape Town, South Africa; and Milan, Italy.

Exciting News for Spain

I am thrilled to share that we are working on the AWS Europe (Spain) Region, set to open in late 2022 or early 2023. This new region will feature three Availability Zones and will mark our seventh region in Europe, joining our existing locations in Dublin, Frankfurt, London, Paris, Stockholm, and the forthcoming Milan region, which is scheduled for early 2020 (for more details, check out the AWS Global Infrastructure page).

AWS customers already benefit from 69 Availability Zones across 22 regions worldwide. With today’s announcement, the total number of global regions, both operational and in development, rises to 26.

During my recent visit to Spain, I had the pleasure of meeting developers in Madrid and Barcelona. Their innovative applications ranged from retail management to entertainment, online advertising analytics, investment recommendations, social scoring, and beyond. Many of these companies were cloud-native startups, heavily utilizing various AWS database services, frequently mentioning Amazon Redshift, AWS Lambda, and AWS CloudFormation. While some focused on domestic markets, others aimed for global outreach, and I have confidence that they will all gain from this new region.

AWS Activate launched in Spain in 2013, providing startups with access to mentorship, one-on-one sessions with AWS experts, web-based training, self-paced labs, customer support, third-party offers, and up to $100,000 in AWS service credits. Our collaboration with the venture capital community, including Caixa Risk Capital and KFund, as well as startup accelerators like Seedrocket and Wayra, has been instrumental.

AWS in Spain

This upcoming region is part of our extensive investment strategy in the Iberian Peninsula. We opened an edge location in Madrid in 2012 and established an office there in 2014. The first Direct Connect location followed in 2016, with another added in 2017, all aimed at supporting the rapid expansion of AWS in the region. We now operate two edge locations in Madrid, along with an office in Barcelona.

In addition to supporting startups through AWS Activate, we offer training through AWS Academy and AWS Educate, both designed to enhance knowledge and skills in cloud computing and available in Spanish. Currently, hundreds of universities and business schools in Spain are utilizing these programs.

The AWS office in Madrid, which I visited during my recent trip, is fully staffed with account managers, business development experts, customer service representatives, partner managers, professional services consultants, solutions architects, and technical account managers. I had the opportunity to participate in an engaging internal session with the team, and I can assure you that, like every Amazon employee, they are fully committed to customer satisfaction and ready to assist you in every way.

If you’re interested in joining our team in Spain, please explore our open positions in Madrid and Barcelona. In the meantime, you might find this post on the four-day workweek particularly insightful, as it discusses work-life balance and productivity.
