Tina Swithin, the author of “Divorcing a Narcissist,” shares her insights on the challenges of ending a relationship with a narcissistic partner. Her journey began in 2009 when she realized that divorcing a narcissist was far more difficult than being married to one. As someone who typically avoids conflict, she was unprepared for the barrage of attacks and falsehoods that her ex-husband launched against her. Even though a therapist had labeled him a “narcissist,” she was blindsided by the severity and frequency of the emotional assaults, which came through emails, texts, and phone calls—each leaving her feeling paralyzed.
The Isolation of the Experience
The isolation she experienced was just as debilitating as the attacks themselves. While many people go through divorces that involve some level of conflict, explaining her situation to friends who had experienced “normal” divorces often made her feel like the one who was losing her grip on reality. Those who she thought were friends often distanced themselves at the first hint of what they saw as drama.
Choosing the High Road
Despite the loneliness of her path, Tina chose to take the high road. Along the way, she connected with others who were enduring similar experiences. Together, they began to educate themselves about Narcissistic Personality Disorder, gaining empowerment through knowledge. They recognized the manipulation, projection, and need for control that characterized their ex-partners’ behaviors.
