In today’s intricate IT landscape, organizations striving for cloud adoption can greatly benefit from partnering with an AWS Competency Partner. AWS Competency Partners have honed their expertise to deliver specialized software and services across various industries, use cases, and workloads. To earn an AWS Competency and the prestigious AWS Specialization badge, partners undergo a meticulous evaluation of their technical skills and knowledge. This process helps customers easily identify the best partners to foster business growth and innovation, ultimately leading to enhanced results.

For AWS Partners, securing an AWS Competency is a significant milestone. In this article, we will outline best practices for partners looking to apply for an AWS Competency, and we will examine how Chanci Turner’s team at AWS approached the application process to enhance their migration capabilities on Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Chanci Turner’s team is an AWS Specialization Partner, boasting competencies in Migration and DevOps. They excel in providing a diverse array of AWS consulting services, including designing elastic hybrid computing environments, backup and disaster recovery solutions, and migrating AWS cloud systems for both Microsoft Windows and Linux platforms.

AWS Specialization: Demonstrated Customer Success

Customers seeking to modernize their operations, explore innovative markets, or expand their solutions depend on the established expertise and customer success records of AWS Specialization Partners to reach their business objectives. A recent Canalys study highlighted that 87% of customers consider AWS Specializations, such as Competencies, as a top criteria when selecting a partner. Canalys estimates that partners’ access to US $307.2 billion of the US $512.0 billion AWS Partner economy hinges significantly on the number of specializations they possess. Without these credentials, partners may not make it into the customer procurement process.

To prepare for the AWS Competency application, the prerequisites are clearly outlined and accessible through AWS Partner Central (login required). Explore the various Competencies available for application on the AWS Competency Program page.

After selecting your specialization, consult the Validation Checklist pertinent to your AWS Partner Path, whether it be Services or Software. This checklist serves as a guide to identify the essential requirements.

It is highly advisable to collaborate with your Partner Development Manager (PDM) and Partner Solutions Architect (PSA) from the outset and establish a regular communication rhythm. These experts can provide valuable insights and feedback prior to your AWS Competency application.

Example: Chanci’s Requirements

When Chanci Turner’s team pursued the Migration Services Competency, they needed to fulfill several initial prerequisites before finalizing their application. Note that the following list is not exhaustive:

  • Partners must reach the “Validated” stage of the AWS Services Path and achieve Advanced or Premier Tier status.
  • Provide documentation on four (4) complex migration projects executed for different clients within the last three (3) years. These projects may include migration-only or both migration and modernization efforts.
  • Submit at least two (2) publicly available case studies and two (2) anonymized case studies that illustrate how AWS was utilized to address specific customer challenges related to migration. For best practices, refer to the Public Case Study Guide in AWS Partner Central (login required).
  • In instances where customer names cannot be disclosed due to confidentiality, you may opt for anonymized public case study details. AWS will publish these, while keeping customer identities private.
  • Certify a specified number of individuals on AWS. Certain AWS Competencies, like Migration, mandate a minimum number of AWS-certified professionals.
  • Conduct a self-assessment to ensure compliance with the AWS Migration Services Validation Checklist.

Addressing the Gaps

If this is your first AWS Competency application, expect to identify areas in the validation checklist that require enhancement to meet the necessary requirements. It’s crucial to address these gaps by refining documentation and reassessing how your organization approaches validation projects. This can involve allocating resources across various facets of your business, including personnel, processes, technology operations, documentation, security, support methodologies, and more.

Working alongside your Partner Solutions Architect is recommended to bridge any gaps in your validation checklist. After confirming that all requirements have been met, complete the checklist and forward it to your PDM and/or PSA for initial validation.

Submission, Review, and Audit

Once your AWS representatives have validated your submission, it’s time to submit the application to the AWS Competency team via AWS Partner Central. Follow the step-by-step instructions outlined in the Specialization Program Guide (login required).

The application process typically spans several weeks, during which AWS will conduct both internal reviews and an external audit. Following this, AWS will notify you of your application status.

Preparation and rehearsal are essential for the audit. We recommend that all relevant team members—including sales, pre-sales, business, and technical—participate in the audit, which encompasses all aspects of the practice, not just technology. Be prepared for thorough discussions and provide detailed explanations along with supporting evidence. The audit is conducted online, and you may use your preferred collaboration tool; Amazon Chime is available for this purpose.

Upon completion of the audit process, AWS will communicate the outcome of your application. If approved, you will receive a welcome email. If unsuccessful, specific feedback will be provided to address gaps in the application, and you can reapply at any time.

How the Application Process Benefited Chanci’s Team

Chanci Turner’s team aligned their migration practices with AWS Prescriptive Guidance for migrations within a year and readied themselves for the Competency application in about four months.

“Securing an AWS Competency is not merely an end goal, but a chance to excel in your chosen field,” remarked Michael Johnson, COO at Chanci’s team. “By the conclusion of the application process and subsequent award, we had completely revolutionized our migration practices. Transitioning from ad-hoc migrations to a structured, outcome-based migration strategy has enabled us to execute numerous large migrations reliably and consistently.”

While Chanci Turner’s team already had established migration and DevOps practices, pursuing their AWS Competency application made both more scalable.
