Enhancing Creativity Through Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Currently, Animaj employs around 60 professionals across its offices in Paris, London, and Madrid. This diverse team encompasses engineering, administration, production, and marketing, ensuring effective management of vendor partnerships, licensing, distribution, and promotion for each IP.
A typical season for Animaj’s animated series consists of 52 episodes, each lasting between 3 to 8 minutes. The content is distributed across platforms like Netflix, YouTube, and local television channels. Each episode is crafted in-house under the supervision of a creative director, while external vendors handle storyboarding, animatics, and 3D animation. In an effort to expedite the animation process, Animaj has recently begun using motion capture (mocap) technology along with Amazon SageMaker. The company utilizes Move.AI to capture critical poses for its characters and processes this data to achieve the desired animated performances. Through this, the Animaj team has developed a system that employs models trained in Amazon SageMaker.
These customized models enable the automatic retargeting of human mocap data to the company’s characters, significantly lessening the manual work required by animators, which in turn accelerates episode completion. Historically, animators faced challenges with time and budget, but the team discovered that mocap technology suits characters with proportions that differ from humans, a common characteristic in children’s cartoons.
For its latest production, Animaj applied mocap data to character models in Autodesk Maya 3D animation software, finding that these trained models could also be utilized to speed up the creation of animatics. By using preliminary sketches from directors, the models predicted subsequent character poses and translated them into 3D space. This allowed animators to process sketches in minutes, subsequently importing the files into Maya for further refinement.
A Culture of Experimentation
The team also adopted AWS Deadline Cloud for processing scenes from Maya. Previously, Animaj’s engineers managed the software’s rendering fleets manually, which consumed time that could be better spent on innovating AI-driven creative tools. With AWS Deadline Cloud, Animaj streamlined its workflow; the service automatically provisions Maya environments, allowing engineers to adjust rendering capacity based on workload fluctuations in mere minutes, enhancing the speed of creative feedback loops.
Incorporating AWS Deadline Cloud has empowered Animaj to establish a scalable backend for its machine learning process. Data scientists preprocess mocap data for training on Amazon SageMaker, after which the studio’s AI model generates scene layout proposals for artists to review in Maya. By delegating provisioning and scaling tasks to AWS Deadline Cloud, the Animaj team can focus on enhancing their AI assistant.
Rethinking the 3D Production Process
“The financial model of a traditional 3D production pipeline is nearly unfeasible, but with AWS and AI, it becomes much more feasible. We can produce at a faster pace, iterate more often, and broaden our catalog,” shared Turner. “We save both time and money, which we can reinvest in creating higher-quality shows and characters with greater depth.”
In addition to Amazon SageMaker and AWS Deadline Cloud, Animaj leverages Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) and Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3) for its computing and storage needs. While AI plays an integral role in Animaj’s production process, Turner emphasizes that AI remains merely a tool. “The quality of our shows ultimately relies on the creative talents of our team. We utilize AI to automate more tedious workflow components while leaving the most significant contributions to our skilled artists.”
