If you utilize Amazon ECS and have configured your cost reporting with specific service filters to monitor your Amazon ECS expenditures and usage, please take note of this update.

As of February 16, 2021, the product name for Amazon Elastic Container Service (Amazon ECS) was officially changed from “EC2 Container Service” to “Elastic Container Service.” Consequently, the way Amazon ECS cost and usage information is presented in the AWS Billing and Cost Management interface has also been altered. This transition affects all AWS Regions and applies to all billing data from February 2021 onward. It is essential to note that this is a one-time, permanent name change, and it does not influence the amounts billed for Amazon ECS tasks operating on Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) and AWS Fargate.

Adjustments Regarding Amazon ECS

The following adjustments regarding Amazon ECS will be reflected across all regions in the AWS Billing and Cost Management console:

  • AWS Bills and Invoices: Your AWS invoices beginning in February 2021 will display the updated product name of Amazon ECS. The Bills page will show this new name for February 2021, as well as for previous months.
  • AWS Cost & Usage Report: While the product code “AmazonECS” remains unchanged in your Cost & Usage Reports, the columns labeled “Product – Product Name” and “Product – Service Name” will now show “Amazon Elastic Container Service” instead of the former “Amazon EC2 Container Service.” If you have developed any custom reporting tools that refer to ECS data in these columns, ensure you update them accordingly to reflect the new product name.
  • AWS Cost Explorer: Within Cost Explorer, Amazon ECS usage will now be categorized under the “Service” filter as “Elastic Container Service.” The former designation of “EC2 Container Service” will still appear for billing periods leading up to January 2021.
  • AWS Budgets: This modification does not affect your existing AWS budgets; AWS Budget reports and alerts will filter ECS using both the old and new product names. When creating new AWS budgets, we suggest using the updated term “Elastic Container Service” when filtering by service.
  • AWS Savings Plans Coverage Report: In the Savings Plan Coverage report, Amazon ECS usage will be listed under the “Service” filter as “Elastic Container Service,” while the previous label of “EC2 Container Service” will be retained for billing periods through January 2021.
