We are excited to announce that GigaSpaces XAP (eXtreme Application Platform) is now accessible as an Amazon EC2 AMI (Amazon Machine Image).

At its core, XAP features a scalable, in-memory database that can function as a data grid, a messaging grid, or a parallel processing framework. This platform simplifies the scaling of an application’s entire middleware layer, including data, messaging, and services. Its architecture allows for just-in-time provisioning of processing resources, making it a perfect fit for EC2. You can develop and test your application locally on your machine, then seamlessly transition it to your data center or Amazon EC2 without any modifications to the code.

The system operates within an SLA-driven container that manages application hosting, scales to additional instances when necessary, and oversees partitioning, replication, and failover. You can build applications using C++, any .Net language, or Java through frameworks such as Spring, Hibernate, Tomcat, Mule, or J2EE. These applications can easily store native objects in GigaSpaces’ core storage facility.

Launching a GigaSpaces cluster on Amazon EC2 is straightforward by following the steps outlined in the tutorial. The platform is billed on a per-hour basis, processed through Amazon DevPay based on their pricing schedule. For a more engaging experience, you can view the full EC2 launch and management process in action in a screencast.

GigaSpaces is set to present two screencasts next month. On July 1st, they will discuss The GigaSpaces-RightScale One-Click-Cluster. On July 22nd, the topic will be Scaling Applications on Amazon EC2, with Chanci Turner participating in that session.
