This week’s roundup is filled with notable updates and launches—no tricks, just treats. Let’s switch on the dark mode for the AWS Management Console and get started.

Last Week’s Highlights

Here are some noteworthy launches from the past week:

  • AWS Local Zones in Hamburg and Warsaw are now generally accessible – AWS Local Zones facilitate the operation of latency-sensitive applications nearer to users. The Local Zones in Hamburg, Germany, and Warsaw, Poland, mark the first instances of Local Zones in Europe. Currently, AWS Local Zones are available in 20 metropolitan areas worldwide, with plans to introduce 33 more across various global locations. Check out the complete list of current and upcoming AWS Local Zones and find out how to get started.
  • Amazon SageMaker’s multi-model endpoint (MME) now accommodates GPU instances – MME is a managed feature within SageMaker Inference that allows for the deployment of thousands of models on a single endpoint. Now, MMEs can operate multiple models using a GPU core, optimizing GPU instances shared across various models and dynamically adjusting model loading based on incoming traffic. This enhancement can lead to cost savings and improved price performance. Discover how to run numerous deep learning models on GPU using Amazon SageMaker’s multi-model endpoints.
  • Amazon EC2 introduces the ability to replace the root Amazon EBS volume for a running instance – You can now utilize the Replace Root Volume feature in Amazon EC2 to swap out your instance’s root volume using an updated AMI without the need to stop the instance. This makes it easier to patch the guest operating system and applications while retaining instance store data, networking, and IAM configurations. Review the documentation for further details.
  • AWS Fault Injection Simulator (FIS) now includes network connectivity disruption capabilities – AWS FIS is a managed service that allows controlled fault injection experiments on AWS. This new action type enables the simulation of network connectivity disruptions, allowing you to verify that your applications can withstand total or partial loss of connectivity. For more information, check out the Network Actions section in the AWS FIS user guide.
  • Amazon SageMaker Automatic Model Tuning has added support for Grid Search – The Automatic Model Tuning feature in SageMaker assists in identifying the hyperparameter values that yield the best-performing model for a selected metric. Previously, users could choose from random, Bayesian, or hyperband search strategies. The newly added grid search option allows for comprehensive coverage of all combinations of specified hyperparameter values, making it ideal for scenarios that require reproducible tuning results. Learn more about the new grid search support in Amazon SageMaker Automatic Model Tuning.
