I had intended to write about resilience in the face of sociopathy this week, but I find myself compelled to share a deeply personal tragedy—the loss of my cherished father. My father, Dr. John M. Leedom, was a remarkable individual and an exceptional physician. This wasn’t the time for such a loss; I had envisioned moving closer to my parents after reclaiming my life. Sadly, I have yet to regain the standing I lost, and now my father won’t be there to witness my journey.
Reflecting on the unexpected turns in life, I’ve thought about the things that weren’t supposed to happen, including my marriage to a narcissist. I’m sure you have your own list of disappointments. Just today, I spoke with a friend who was devastated by the impending loss of her 15-year-old dog, now paralyzed and beyond affordable treatment. She felt utterly helpless, with little hope for recovery.
I reminded her, “You must come to terms with the hand you’ve been dealt. Once you emotionally accept the reality of the situation, you’ll find clarity in making the right choices.” It was a poignant moment, as her sharing her grief empowered both of us. I’m striving to accept my own reality and to discover how to move forward from here.
