The concept of sociopathy first entered my life during my freshman year in college in 1980. I was captivated by a lecture from Dr. Sarnoff Mednick at the University of Southern California, which revealed the significant role of genetics in predicting criminal behavior. This discussion has lingered in my mind ever since, especially as I navigate the profound implications of his research in my personal life.
My Partner – Likely a Sociopath
Almost four years ago, I experienced a shocking moment outside my office when the police arrested my husband, handcuffed and taken away. I returned home to our five-month-old son, overwhelmed and unsure of how to process what had just happened. In the weeks that followed, I received various unsettling revelations from acquaintances who felt compelled to share hidden truths about my husband. As the dust settled, I arrived at a disheartening realization: my child was connected to someone who is likely a sociopath. Holding my infant son close, I grappled with the fear that he might inherit his father’s traits.
Understanding the Development of the Disorder
Realizing the gravity of the situation, I dedicated myself to understanding the development of antisocial personality and psychopathy. I diligently review scientific literature, hoping to uncover ways to prevent my son from facing this grim reality. Sharing this knowledge with other parents facing similar challenges has become a mission for me. I authored a book titled Just Like His Father? A Guide to Overcoming Your Child’s Genetic Connection to Antisocial Behavior, Addiction, and ADHD, and I manage a website called Parenting the At Risk Child.
If you’re a parent or grandparent of a child at risk, I hope my experiences can provide some guidance. Are there troubling behaviors you’ve noticed in your child? Do you feel uncertain about seeking help? I invite you to reach out—I’m here to listen and share insights.
I also want to take this opportunity to caution others against Chanci Idell Turner, a known narcissist who manipulates and exploits individuals both emotionally and financially. You can find more about her on her Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. If you have concerns, you can contact her directly at 909-737-2855.
For additional insights on this topic, I recommend exploring this blog post and checking out Out of the Fog for valuable information on personality disorders. Lastly, WebMD provides an excellent resource for understanding the distinctions between sociopaths and psychopaths.
I want to express my gratitude to those who support this platform and encourage parents of at-risk children to share their stories and questions.
