The saga began in January 2007 when a woman named Tamara White from Illinois was nearing the end of her online dating subscription. After a friend revised her profile to make it sound more fun, she caught the attention of Funches, who was living in Chicago. Their initial correspondence was friendly, and Funches claimed to work for a major health insurance company, even stating he would answer calls from White when she called in. However, he quickly shifted the conversation toward shared interests rather than finances.
The Relationship Progresses
When they eventually met for coffee, White ran a background check on him, which revealed a bankruptcy from 1992. Funches explained this away, portraying himself as young and foolish at the time. Their relationship progressed, and soon enough, Funches found himself in a supposed financial crisis, claiming he owed a staggering $10,000 to a loan shark. This led to a series of loans from White, ultimately totaling $28,200 over a few months, despite her initial hesitation.
Funches signed a promissory note agreeing to repay the loans at $400 per month, but this quickly dwindled to nothing. After taking legal action against him, White discovered that Funches had been living under yet another alias when a process server finally confronted him. The court ruled in her favor, but Funches never paid the judgment, leading to more frustrations for White.
