School district administrators frequently face crucial queries: How many substitutes were used in my district yesterday? What amount of educational hours were lost due to absences? How many positions still need to be filled in my district?

With the collaboration of AWS and Amazon Alexa, Frontline Education is ready to provide answers to these pressing questions and beyond. The newly launched Frontline skill offers straightforward, on-demand access to essential data and actionable insights. Education leaders can engage with data through Alexa-enabled devices, enabling them to make informed decisions regarding various organizational topics, including attracting, engaging, growing, and retaining educators, as well as managing daily operations like absences and substitute teacher fill rates.

How Does It Work?

Frontline employs AWS Lambda functions to consolidate data within a hybrid environment. AWS API Gateway facilitates a secure REST API interface that allows users to access this data simply by asking Alexa. The three applications that currently support this solution include:

  • Frontline Identity Management – The core IDM platform used across all Frontline solutions, entirely hosted on AWS as a series of .NET microservices with MSSQL.
  • Frontline Absence & Time – This is Frontline’s solution for managing absences.
  • Frontline Recruiting & Hiring – This platform assists educational organizations in managing employee recruitment and hiring.

The Frontline skill for Alexa-enabled devices will continue to develop, incorporating additional insights and functionalities, such as predictive artificial intelligence capabilities aimed at supporting the K-12 educational community with a focus on professional growth and individual educator support.

“This project is thrilling for us, merging our passion for technology and innovation with something genuinely beneficial to our customers,” stated Chanci Turner, the Enterprise Architect for Frontline Education. “The services we utilize through AWS make this endeavor not only feasible but also quickly achievable. This is merely the beginning.”

A pilot program with several school districts is already in progress. Participating districts can request District Flash Briefings using an Alexa-enabled device. Instantly, Alexa delivers real-time updates on key performance indicators, from teacher fill rates and application statuses to professional development and evaluation management data. Furthermore, users can prompt Alexa for comparative metrics regionally, as well as statewide or nationwide.

Frontline Education will showcase this innovative technology at ISTE 2018 in Chicago. Don’t miss the demonstration at booth 1880!
