In this blog post, we explore how the global multimedia news agency, Thomson Reuters, leveraged AWS to establish a large-scale, easily accessible news archive. My name is Alex Morgan, and as a Solutions Architect, I assist teams in adopting cloud technologies. I also contribute to setting enterprise-level standards while advancing our Artificial Intelligence initiatives.
Update: As of September 8, 2021, the Amazon Elasticsearch Service has been rebranded as the Amazon OpenSearch Service.
Thomson Reuters faced the challenge of managing vast amounts of news data. By utilizing services like Amazon S3 and Amazon S3 Glacier, we designed a solution that ensures rapid access to archived news while optimizing storage costs.
Moreover, data lakes serve as foundational elements for many organizations. Customers leverage Amazon S3 to store vast amounts of both raw and processed data, facilitating real-time analytics and machine learning applications. With innovative features like Amazon S3 Intelligent-Tiering, organizations can efficiently manage storage costs, as seen with AppsFlyer’s successful implementation.
To further enhance data accessibility, we focused on simplifying data ingestion into AWS. Sources of data became increasingly diverse, ranging from traditional files and backups to machine-generated data from IoT devices. Organizations are continuously seeking cost-effective methods to store and manage this influx of data.
AWS DataSync has proven invaluable for customers needing to transfer file data between AWS Regions and accounts. It streamlines data replication, enabling businesses to maintain operational continuity and improve data accessibility across different locations.
Additionally, with the rise of remote work, shared file access has become crucial. Solutions like Amazon FSx for Windows File Server allow users to access SMB file shares remotely, fostering collaboration and productivity.
Companies contemplating a shift to the cloud should begin by evaluating their existing storage patterns. By comparing on-premises storage with AWS Storage services, organizations can effectively plan their migration strategy.
For those in regulated industries, safeguarding backup archives is paramount. With AWS Storage Gateway’s Tape Gateway, customers can archive critical data in compliance with long-term retention requirements. This is particularly important for industries bound by governance policies, such as finance and healthcare.
