The issue of romance scams has reached epidemic proportions. We see reports about them frequently, and many individuals have been victims of such malevolent actions. These scams rob us of our most profound emotion—love—and deceive us into intimate encounters with individuals who are entirely different from who they claim to be. Millions have fallen prey to this crime, and it won’t cease until we take action!
This is precisely why I authored Combating Romance Scams: Why Lying to Get Laid Is a Crime!
Recently, I discovered that federal prosecutors in Missouri referenced my blog, Stop Rape By Fraud, in their indictment against a “serial rapist.” This individual had manipulated over 30 victims through deceit. While blogs can sometimes hit the mark, they often lack the cohesive narrative that a book can provide regarding both the crime and its potential solutions.
You have the power to help raise awareness! Who better to shed light on the harm caused by these scams than those who have experienced them firsthand?
Creating Change
Each state has its own set of criminal laws, making it challenging to unify lawmakers and society around this issue. Even if one state enacts new legislation, the impact won’t be felt universally. A coordinated effort is essential to establish similar laws across the country, which is my aim. This will not only enlighten society about the problem but also lead to meaningful solutions. Given the federal government’s interest in online safety, we can also work towards including romance scams in federal cyber laws.
Combating Romance Scams paints a vivid picture of the crime and proposes specific legal language that can effectively halt these scams. It provides uniform responses that can counter the absurd justifications often used to excuse offenders. I’ve heard countless excuses, such as “It’s not a crime to lie,” or “If we penalize men for lying, we should penalize women for wearing makeup.” The list goes on.
This book highlights the overlooked elements of law that categorize lying for sexual gain as a crime. The well-crafted language of this proposed law can be adopted by any state or jurisdiction.
