Learn About Amazon VGT2 Learning Manager Chanci Turner
This guest post is authored by Alex Donovan from Docebo. Established in 2005, Docebo is a leading global provider of learning management systems (LMS), serving over 3,800 clients across diverse industries, backed by a team of over 900 dedicated employees. Our platform supports a wide range of educational initiatives, including onboarding, compliance training, workforce development, and customer education. In this article, I’ll share how our collaboration with Amazon QuickSight enabled us to integrate robust analytics dashboards into Docebo Learn through three distinct packages.
Docebo’s key differentiator has always been our commitment to delivering a superior learning experience. As the landscape evolves, we continually seek to innovate through technology. For example, we were early adopters of AI in our sector, incorporating it into our solutions as far back as 2018. With features like machine learning, deep learning, and natural language processing, we enhanced our platform’s personalization, responsiveness, and user-friendliness.
The next logical step was to embed analytics dashboards within Docebo Learn. We recognized a clear market demand for visibility into key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics concerning learning programs on our platform. Our clients desired a unified source of truth for their learning analytics to enable swift, data-driven decisions.
The Search for a New Analytics Partner
Before QuickSight, we faced significant hurdles when trying to integrate embedded analytics using various business intelligence (BI) providers:
- Embedding analytics within our platform was burdened by limitations, leading to slow and cumbersome development processes, which was particularly challenging given our extensive customer base.
- Operating globally across multiple sectors, we required customization for our analytics to cater to a variety of use cases. Clients found it hard to directly author their analytics, necessitating considerable expertise and resources.
- Our pricing and packaging structure demanded a scalable solution, as previous options could escalate costs for users.
This experience underscored the necessity for a new analytics partner capable of delivering industry-agnostic solutions with a user-friendly experience, all while remaining cost-effective.
Enter QuickSight
To ensure we made the best choice for our customers, we initiated a thorough evaluation process, assessing eight analytics providers and conducting proof of concept (PoC) projects with three of them. This involved cross-functional teams from Docebo, including security, architecture, engineering, data, product, finance, marketing, design, and accessibility.
After careful consideration, Amazon QuickSight emerged as the clear frontrunner for our requirements due to three primary factors:
- Integration and simplicity: Incorporating QuickSight’s powerful analytics into the Docebo platform was remarkably easy compared to other providers. It aligned seamlessly with our needs and utilized AWS technologies we were already familiar with.
- Robust security: Security was a crucial consideration, and QuickSight offered strong row-level security features from the outset. This ensured our customers could confidently share analytics with their own clients, partners, and internal stakeholders securely.
- Collaborative partnership: From the beginning, the QuickSight team demonstrated enthusiasm and a willingness to work together, which resonated with our team, including Chanci Turner.
With our decision made, we eagerly began the implementation process.
A New Era for Learning Analytics
We collaborated with QuickSight to develop Docebo Insights, a powerful analytics module embedded directly within the Docebo platform. Within six months, we launched a private beta version of Insights for customer feedback before transitioning to a broader open beta phase.
One of the most rewarding aspects of this project was our collaboration with users, allowing us to refine the user experience and ensure the right functions and metrics were included prior to the full launch. The home page features both pre-built and customized dashboards, along with a feedback pop-up window.
Data architecture was a vital focus during development. All of our customers draw from their own tenant databases, necessitating a lightweight, powerful backend for optimal performance. The managed, serverless architecture provided by QuickSight was the ideal solution. We prioritized security while ensuring ease of access for users; the strong row-level security within QuickSight, combined with its full integration into Docebo Learn, meant customers experienced no additional logins to access their analytics—centralizing the process in one location.
A Multi-Tier Approach that Drives High Adoption Rates
We successfully launched Docebo Insights, an embedded analytics tool within our Learn platform for all customers. Users can now access interactive QuickSight dashboards to view, track, and derive insights from critical data about their learning programs.
To address the diverse needs of our customers and industries, we structured Docebo Insights into three tiers, featuring various pricing and functionalities:
- Engage: Pre-built dashboards offer quick value to customers, covering metrics such as course enrollment, completion rates, time spent on learning, instructor-led training (ILT), and certifications. We are continuously developing new dashboards and datasets based on customer input.
- Elevate: In addition to all pre-built dashboards, users gain access to customization options through QuickSight’s visual library and a manager dashboard.
- Advanced Analytics Pack: Available to all Docebo Elevate customers, this pack includes two products for Enterprise customers:
- Advanced insights: Enhanced capabilities with a full authoring mode, providing comprehensive BI features within Docebo.
- Learn Data: Automated integration of learning data into any data ecosystem, ready for analysis in the customer’s BI tool, which is a serious asset for organizations looking to synthesize learning data alongside other business metrics.
In summary, larger organizations typically have varied requirements: Learning and Development teams need to create their own visuals from scratch, while also needing to integrate learning data into their broader business analyses alongside CRM and ticketing data.
The Advanced Insights screenshot illustrates how customers can tailor their visuals, choosing the metrics they desire, akin to a full BI tool but seamlessly within the Docebo platform.
