Empowering Meteorologists with AWS High Performance Computing
Training meteorologists to effectively utilize high-performance computing (HPC) resources and interpret the resulting data is a vital aspect of many research initiatives. Establishing a flexible and user-friendly platform for both on-site and remote training has become essential for fostering a collaborative environment around research objectives. A noteworthy example of this is found in the NOAA National Weather Service’s Warning Decision Training Division (WDTD), which creates and provides training on the comprehensive components of the hazardous weather warning process within a National Weather Service (NWS) office.
In partnership with the University of Oklahoma’s Cooperative Institute for Mesoscale Meteorological Studies (OU/CIMMS), WDTD runs its primary course, the Radar and Applications Course (RAC). This training equips forecasters with the skills necessary to issue warnings for severe weather events such as flash floods, intense thunderstorms, and tornadoes.
