Idaho Governor Mark Thompson recently announced a pivotal partnership between Amazon Web Services (AWS) and the Idaho STEM Action Center aimed at equipping 2,000 residents with essential cloud computing skills over the next two years. This initiative will enhance training and professional development for educators tasked with delivering cloud computing courses throughout the state. It seeks to empower Idahoans to reskill or upskill in high-demand cloud computing fields, ultimately supporting local employers in filling critical job vacancies.

Since its inception in 2015, the Idaho STEM Action Center has championed equitable access to technology education for students and communities across the state. This new initiative aligns with Governor Thompson’s vision of fostering a competitive workforce and economy through advancements in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).

“We are thrilled to collaborate with AWS to enhance training and certifications for individuals across Idaho,” stated Governor Thompson. “Increasing the number of certified workers in cloud computing will benefit our growing businesses and provide quality job opportunities for our residents.”

Educational Opportunities for Idaho Residents

The newly announced initiative will offer various educational programs for students and adults seeking to re-enter the workforce. All publicly funded high schools and higher education institutions in Idaho are invited to engage with the AWS Academy as part of this statewide effort. AWS education programs will supply institutions with comprehensive cloud computing curricula that prepare participants for high-demand job roles and industry-recognized certifications, such as AWS Cloud Practitioner and AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate.

AWS is dedicated to supporting Idaho’s education leaders by providing local instructors with professional development, technical training, and complimentary certification exams for those teaching AWS Cloud computing courses. Educators will participate in instructor training sessions led by AWS experts and gain access to a limited number of free AWS Certification exams. Additionally, students will benefit from self-paced online training courses and labs offered by AWS.

Addressing Idaho’s Demand for Technical Skills

Idaho, like many states, faces a pressing need for skilled tech professionals. According to data from Economic Modeling Specialists International (EMSI), there are currently 11,194 unfilled cloud computing positions within the state. LinkedIn’s findings reveal that cloud computing has consistently ranked among the most sought-after hard skills for the past five years, and two AWS Certifications are listed among the highest-paying credentials by Global Knowledge.

“By providing innovative professional development opportunities like this, we can help Idaho strengthen its workforce and stimulate economic growth,” remarked Dr. Linda Harrington, executive director of the Idaho STEM Action Center. “This partnership will elevate the digital literacy of Idaho’s students and expand the pool of certified cloud computing professionals.”

The technical training and education facilitated by AWS will concentrate on preparing individuals for available roles across various industries, including software development, cloud architecture, data science, and cybersecurity. Employers such as Tech Solutions, St. Luke’s Health System, and Cloud Innovations have expressed their support for building a skilled cloud-based workforce.

“Cloud technology is increasingly vital for IT roles,” noted Jack Smith, director of operations at Tech Solutions. “The shift caused by the pandemic has led to a greater reliance on cloud services for everything from remote work to telemedicine. Our clients now expect IT solutions that simply work, allowing them to focus on their core business operations.”

This partnership exemplifies AWS’s commitment to skill, upskill, and reskill individuals globally. Learn about similar initiatives in other states and countries by exploring related programs.
